IITs Bar Over 20 Companies from Placement Drive

In a significant move aimed at protecting the career prospects and mental well-being of students, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have collectively decided to ban over 20 companies from participating in this year’s placement season. This decision comes in response to these companies rescinding job offers made to students, with some withdrawals occurring as late as June or July of this year.

Reasons for the Ban

The primary reason for this ban is the detrimental impact that the late rescinding of job offers has on students. Many IITs have policies that prevent students with existing job offers from attending further interviews. As a result, the last-minute cancellations not only jeopardize students’ career opportunities but also adversely affect their mental health.

According to officials, the decision to bar these companies was made unanimously across the IITs to ensure that students are not left in precarious situations during this critical phase of their academic and professional lives.

Details of the Ban

The list of banned companies was finalized after a thorough review process, which included cross-verification by placement coordinators at 15 different IITs. The review took into account the companies’ past records, particularly those that had a history of revoking offers. Some of the companies that have been banned are primarily in the data analytics and software sectors.

Despite being banned from the on-campus recruitment process, these companies are still allowed to recruit students through off-campus methods.

Impact on Students

The impact of rescinded job offers can be profound. A computer science graduate from IIT-Bombay’s batch of 2025 shared his experience of having his job offer revoked just two days before his joining date. He had received an offer of nearly Rs 30 lakh, which was rescinded on May 29, 2025. Fortunately, he was able to secure a better offer through an alumnus shortly thereafter.

However, the situation is not the same for all students. Many of his peers faced similar challenges, with some offers being revoked as well. The timing of these cancellations, particularly around June and July, complicates matters for the institutes, as the second phase of the placement process typically concludes by the end of the academic year.

Support from IITs

In light of these challenges, IITs have extended support to affected students. An IIT professor involved in the placement process noted that the institutes are actively trying to communicate with higher authorities in the companies that have rescinded offers. The aim is to address these issues and seek resolutions that could benefit the students.

Focus on Start-ups

This year, the IITs have also decided to place greater emphasis on encouraging participation from start-ups, particularly those promoted by the Indian government under the Viksit Bharat scheme. The job market has been slow, but IITs are reaching out to more companies and encouraging start-ups incubated on prominent campuses to engage with students.

The professor mentioned that despite the challenges, the current placement season appears to be progressing positively, with numerous opportunities being explored for students.

Conclusion

The decision to bar over 20 companies from the IIT placement drive underscores the commitment of these prestigious institutions to safeguard the interests of their students. By taking a stand against companies that have previously rescinded offers, the IITs are not only protecting students’ career prospects but also promoting a healthier mental environment during a stressful time in their academic journey. As the placement season continues, the focus on collaboration with start-ups and proactive measures to support students will be crucial in navigating the evolving job market.
