The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is set to play a pivotal role in organizing the fourth edition of the ‘Kashi Tamil Sangamam (KTS 4.0)’. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, aims to celebrate the enduring civilizational bond between Tamil Nadu and Kashi (Varanasi).

The event is scheduled to take place from December 2, 2025, culminating with a grand finale in Rameswaram. This edition promises to build upon the successes of previous gatherings, focusing on revitalizing and strengthening the cultural, linguistic, and intellectual ties between these two historic centers of learning.

Key Highlights of Kashi Tamil Sangamam 4.0

  • Valedictory Function: The event will conclude with a significant function in Rameswaram.
  • Launch of “Tamil Karpom”: This initiative aims to enable students from North India to learn Tamil in Tamil Nadu.
  • Agasthya Expedition: A journey from Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu, to Varanasi, following the trail of Sage Agasthyar.
  • Awareness Campaign: Focus on the benefits of the Indian System of Siddha Medicine and the promotion of classical texts and ancient places.

IIT Madras will serve as the Knowledge Partner for KTS 4.0, collaborating with Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and the Government of Uttar Pradesh. Several Central Ministries, including Culture, Railways, Textiles, and Tourism, will also be involved in the organization of the event.

Director’s Statement

Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, expressed enthusiasm for this year’s theme, “Karpom Tamil (Let us Learn Tamil)”. He emphasized the initiative’s goal to spread awareness about the richness of the Tamil language across the country. He also mentioned the organization of Tamil language learning sessions for students and youth in Kashi.

Participation and Activities

Over 1,500 delegates from Tamil Nadu are expected to participate in the event across seven diverse categories:

  1. Students: College, technical, and skill institution students.
  2. Teachers: College and school teachers, including retired and working teachers and Hindi Pracharaks.
  3. Writers & Media: Book publishers, content writers, editors, and social media professionals.
  4. Agriculture & Allied: Agriculture students, farmers, animal husbandry professionals, and artisans.
  5. Professionals & Artisans: Entrepreneurs, start-ups, medical professionals, lawyers, accountants, and handicrafts workers.
  6. Women: Self-help group members, Mudra Loan beneficiaries, and self-employed individuals.
  7. Spiritual: Classical singers, spiritual teachers, temple pujaris, and workers.

Additionally, around 300 students from Uttar Pradesh and Varanasi will travel to Tamil Nadu for Tamil language orientation sessions at the Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT) and other designated colleges.
