Student Welfare Initiatives at IIT Kharagpur

Kolkata: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has recently taken a significant step towards enhancing student welfare by initiating a three-day virtual interaction with the parents of first-year students and boarders of the Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Hall of Residence. This initiative aims to foster trust, transparency, and a sense of shared responsibility among the institute, students, and their families.

First of Its Kind Initiative

IIT Kharagpur is the first IIT in India to introduce a dedicated parents-administration meeting focused on the well-being of students. The discussions, which began on Tuesday, are structured into various time slots and are set to continue until Thursday.

Positive Feedback from Parents

On the first day of the interaction, the feedback from parents was overwhelmingly positive. Arun Chakraborty, the Dean of Students’ Well-being, shared insights about the measures the institute has implemented to support students. He highlighted key initiatives such as:

  • The wellness buddy programme
  • Life skills courses
  • Joy and success courses
  • Various student engagement activities

Chakraborty emphasized the importance of parents visiting the campus at least once each semester and encouraged them to avoid pressuring their children. He advocated for fostering good conversations between parents and students.

Addressing Mental Health Concerns

In response to rising mental health concerns, an expert committee was formed to investigate a series of suicides on campus. The committee found that approximately 80% of students felt pressured by their parents to secure prestigious internships and job placements. To mitigate this issue, the panel recommended continuous interaction between the institute and parents to familiarize them with the IIT system.

Support Systems for Students

To further enhance student support, the institute has assigned at least seven counselors, referred to as ‘wellness buddies’, to various halls of residence. These counselors will be available from 8 PM to 5 AM, providing students with access to mental health resources during critical hours. Each hostel will have a counselor present three times a week, and students from other hostels can also seek appointments. The institute plans to add three more counselors soon.

Concerns Raised by Parents

During the meeting, parents voiced several concerns regarding:

  • Food quality in the hostels
  • Maintenance issues on campus
  • Problems related to stray dogs

In response, the administration assured parents that their grievances would be addressed promptly. They announced the initiation of a common kitchen initiative aimed at ensuring food quality control. Additionally, the institute is developing a designated pet zone for dogs to alleviate concerns related to stray animals.

Collaborative Efforts for Student Welfare

The meet was attended by various senior representatives, including:

  • Dean of Students’ Well-being
  • Dean of Students’ Affairs
  • Hall Management Centre
  • LBS Hall wardens
  • Chief of Staff at the Director’s Office
  • Student leaders from the Technology Students’ Gymkhana and LBS Hall Council

This collaborative effort underscores the institute’s commitment to creating a supportive environment for its students, ensuring their academic and emotional needs are met.

Conclusion

The initiative by IIT Kharagpur to engage with parents marks a progressive step in addressing student welfare. By fostering open communication and collaboration, the institute aims to create a nurturing environment that prioritizes the well-being of its students.
