India on Track for Strong Global Economic Role, Driven by Tech and Manufacturing

New Delhi, Dec 16 (IANS) – India is poised to become a powerful economy, with its growth trajectory heavily reliant on advancements in technology and manufacturing, according to Sukumar Mishra, the Director of the Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad. Speaking at the inauguration of the National Industrial Exhibition cum seminar in Bokaro, Mishra expressed optimism about the nation’s economic future.

Key Drivers of Economic Growth

Mishra highlighted several critical sectors that are expected to play a pivotal role in India’s long-term economic progress:

  • Manufacturing Sector: The manufacturing industry is seen as a cornerstone of economic development, with potential to create jobs and enhance productivity.
  • Agriculture: Innovative agricultural practices are vital for improving food security and boosting rural economies.
  • Emerging Technologies: The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing into various sectors will drive efficiency and innovation.

Vision for 2045

Mishra projected that 2045 would mark a significant milestone for India as it strives for developed nation status. He stated, “The way India is progressing, keeping this in mind, is full of promise.” He emphasized that, similar to the dominance of the US dollar, the Indian rupee could also achieve a strong position in the global economy.

Long-term Planning Over Short-term Concerns

In his address, Mishra urged a shift in focus from immediate economic concerns, such as declining GDP and the rising strength of the dollar, towards long-term strategic planning. He noted the importance of fostering an integrated manufacturing sector and embracing new agricultural concepts as part of this vision.

Historical Context and Evolving Mantras

Mishra referenced India’s historical slogans that have guided its development, starting with “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” (Hail the Soldier, Hail the Farmer). He explained that over time, this mantra evolved to include “Jai Vigyan” (Hail Science) and, most recently, “Jai Anusandhan” (Hail Research). This evolution reflects the increasing importance of scientific research and technological advancement in the nation’s growth narrative.

Transforming Knowledge into Technology

According to Mishra, the current imperative is to convert knowledge into practical applications—transforming scientific insights into technological innovations. He stated, “Only by doing so will India once again become a world leader in all four areas: agriculture, manufacturing, science, and technology.”

India’s Economic Performance

Despite facing global economic challenges, India has emerged as the world’s fastest-growing economy. In the first two quarters of the current financial year, the nation recorded impressive growth rates of 7.8% and 8.2%. This resilience underscores the potential for sustained economic expansion driven by the sectors highlighted by Mishra.

Conclusion

In summary, the insights shared by Sukumar Mishra at the National Industrial Exhibition underscore the critical role of technology and manufacturing in shaping India’s economic future. With a focus on long-term strategic planning and the integration of emerging technologies, India is well-positioned to achieve its economic goals and emerge as a formidable global economic power.
