IIT Roorkee Inaugurates Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2025 – Hardware Edition Grand Finale

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has officially inaugurated the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2025 – Hardware Edition Grand Finale. This prestigious event is hosted by Rethink! The Tinkering Lab and has brought together 150 students and 36 faculty mentors from across the nation. As a designated Nodal Centre under the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell (MIC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), IIT Roorkee plays a crucial role in nurturing the next generation of hardware innovators in India.

Inauguration Ceremony

The inauguration ceremony was attended by dignitaries, faculty coordinators, and participating teams, and included a virtual linkage with the central inauguration of SIH 2025. The event commenced with a welcome address by Prof. Varun Sharma, the Single Point of Contact (SPOC) for SIH 2025. Representatives from the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell also delivered remarks, emphasizing the importance of innovation in education.

Focus Areas of the Hackathon

This year’s Hardware Edition at IIT Roorkee features 25 teams that are tackling five critical problem statements provided by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW). The problem statements focus on:

  • Extreme-weather surveillance
  • Satellite-integrated handheld radios
  • Crop maturity prediction tools
  • Low-cost cotton-picking solutions
  • Improved jute retting machinery

These challenges are directly aligned with national missions such as Atmanirbhar Bharat, Viksit Bharat@2047, Digital India, Make in India, and Agriculture 4.0.

Statements from Leadership

During the inaugural session, Prof. K.K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, remarked, “The Smart India Hackathon exemplifies India’s commitment to technology-driven problem solving. At IIT Roorkee, we are proud to host innovators who are developing hardware solutions that will contribute directly to national priorities in security, agriculture, and rural livelihoods. This Hackathon reflects the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat—ideas emerging from India, for India.”

Prof. Varun Sharma, the SPOC for SIH 2025, highlighted the institutional commitment to innovation, stating, “SIH provides students a unique ecosystem to convert challenges into workable, real-world solutions. IIT Roorkee is honoured to support this national mission and work closely with the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell to build a robust innovation pipeline for the country.”

Hackathon Structure and Support

The week-long Hackathon is designed to allow teams to work intensively within the Tinkering Lab ecosystem at IIT Roorkee. They will be guided by jury members and expert mentors from various departments, including:

  • Mechanical & Industrial Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
