IIT Madras To Launch New B.Tech Course Blending Music And Mathematics

Chennai, November 20, 2025 – In an exciting development for students and educators alike, IIT Madras has announced the launch of a new Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) curriculum that integrates music and mathematics. This innovative course was unveiled by the Director of IIT Madras, V. Kamakoti, during the inauguration of the Margazhi Maha Utsavam, an event organized by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in Mylapore, where Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi presided.

The Importance of Culture in Education

During his address at the event, Kamakoti emphasized the necessity of preserving Indian culture from an early age. He stated, “If culture is removed, Bharattva will disappear. Our culture is essential for the holistic development of every child.” This statement reflects the institute’s commitment to integrating traditional arts into modern education.

Admissions for Traditional Musicians

In a progressive move, IIT Madras has begun admitting traditional musicians into its B.Tech programs, even if their scores on the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) are lower than the standard cut-off. To date, seven students have enrolled under this initiative, showcasing the institute’s dedication to inclusivity and the promotion of arts alongside technical education.

Linking Music and Mathematics

Kamakoti highlighted the deep connections between music and mathematics, stating, “Music and mathematics are deeply connected. Melodies themselves are mathematical.” This perspective underlines the rationale behind the new curriculum, which aims to nurture creativity and analytical skills through the study of both disciplines.

Future Plans and Initiatives

In addition to the new B.Tech course, IIT Madras is also establishing a research center named after the renowned composer Isaignani Ilaiyaraaja. The institute plans to build a new 100-seat auditorium to facilitate musical performances and cultural events. Currently, 36 seats have been allocated under the Music and Culture category, with seven already filled. Discussions are ongoing to extend similar admissions policies to other IITs, further promoting the integration of arts in technical education.
