IIT Madras, Indian Navy & Apollo Micro Systems’ Strategic Collaboration to Accelerate Indigenous Defence Technology Development
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has recently entered into a significant strategic collaboration with the Indian Navy and Apollo Micro Systems Limited. This partnership aims to fast-track the indigenous development of advanced defence technologies. The formal exchange of a Joint Development Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) took place during the Indian Navy’s ‘Swavalamban 2025’ event held in Delhi on 25th November 2025, in the presence of Hon’ble Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh.
Objective of the Collaboration
This tri-partite alliance combines the academic research and development (R&D) expertise of IIT Madras, the operational needs of the Indian Navy, and the engineering and manufacturing capabilities of Apollo Micro Systems. The primary objective is to create a unified innovation ecosystem that supports India’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) in the defence sector.
Key Highlights of the MoU
Prof. PA Ramakrishna from the Department of Aerospace Engineering at IIT Madras, who is coordinating this project, emphasized the importance of this strategic MoU. He stated, “This collaborative framework is designed to jointly address current and emerging technological problem statements of the Armed Forces. Our partnership aims to accelerate the transition of laboratory innovations into real-world, deployment-ready products tailored for the nation’s defence needs.”
The successful outcomes of this partnership are expected to significantly contribute to the Ministry of Defence’s targets for self-reliance in critical and strategically sensitive technologies. This, in turn, will strengthen India’s position as a global defence innovation hub.
Statements from Key Stakeholders
Mr. Karunakar Reddy, Managing Director of Apollo Micro Systems Limited, remarked, “This strategic understanding serves as a gateway to solving some of the most critical problem statements of our Armed Forces in a comprehensive manner. The synergy between IIT Madras’ research excellence, our manufacturing strength, and DGNAI’s operational role creates a powerful ecosystem for defence indigenisation.”
Focus Areas of the Collaboration
The alliance will focus on multiple critical technology areas, including:
- Advanced electronic warfare
- Precision guidance and navigation
- High-energy armament systems
- Emerging high-technology solutions across domains
Roles and Responsibilities
In this collaboration, IIT Madras will serve as the Research Anchor, leading the development of fundamental research, advanced concepts, and intellectual property (IP). The institute will focus on early-stage design, prototyping, and future-oriented technological solutions across multi-domain defence applications.
The Directorate General of Naval Armament Inspection (DGNAI) of the Indian Navy will contribute mission-critical operational knowledge, user requirements, and test protocols. Its responsibilities include evaluating new technologies, validating performance, and ensuring alignment with stringent naval standards and integration requirements.
Apollo Micro Systems Limited will act as the Technology Development and Manufacturing Partner. With over four decades of experience, the company will convert research outputs into ruggedized, production-scale systems. They will support rapid engineering, system integration, and manufacturing for induction into defence platforms.
About the Directorate General of Naval Armament Inspection (DGNAI)
The DGNAI, located at the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Navy), is entrusted with the indigenisation and quality assurance of armament stores and associated equipment. The Directorate plays a crucial role in enhancing self-reliance in naval armaments, ensuring that mission-critical systems meet the highest standards of performance, safety, and reliability.
