IIT-Madras Brings Innovation-Based Tamil Learning Model ‘Vidyashakti’ to Kashi

Varanasi, India – The Kashi Tamil Sangamam 4.0 exhibition, held at Namo Ghat, is showcasing a significant initiative by IIT Madras known as ‘Vidyashakti’. This innovative education model aims to enhance Tamil language learning by integrating modern digital tools and techniques. With the theme ‘Tamil Karkalam (Learn Tamil)’, the exhibition highlights how language learning can be made simple, engaging, and accessible through various interactive methods such as simulations, gaming, quizzes, and digital content.

Overview of Vidyashakti

Launched in 2021 under the leadership of Dr. Shiva from IIT Madras, the Vidyashakti initiative has been actively transforming the educational landscape in Tamil Nadu and beyond. It focuses on making Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education more interesting and accessible. Currently, Vidyashakti is operational in 10 districts of Uttar Pradesh, where it conducts live Tamil classes daily from 2 PM to 2:30 PM in 650 schools.

Learning Approach

The program is designed to teach students essential skills such as:

  • Basic vocabulary
  • Pronunciation
  • Daily communication
  • Tamil script recognition

These skills are taught in a fun and enjoyable format, making the learning process engaging for students. In addition to regular classes, Vidyashakti also holds special Tamil sessions every day from 10 AM to 11 AM specifically for:

  • Sanitary workers
  • NCC cadets
  • Students

These sessions are tailored to meet the specific needs of each group. For instance, sanitation workers are trained in workplace-specific conversations, NCC cadets learn Tamil vocabulary related to commands and parades, and students are taught using flow-learning charts.

Positioning Tamil as a Practical Language

Vidyashakti aims to position Tamil not merely as an academic subject but as a practical language essential for daily life, communication, and professional environments. This approach helps to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world applications, making Tamil more relevant to learners.

Wider Reach and Impact

Vidyashakti’s impact extends beyond India. The initiative is currently active in:

  • 7,210 villages across India
  • 5,000 villages in Sri Lanka

The launch of Vidyashakti in Uttar Pradesh was graced by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, marking a significant milestone in the initiative’s journey. Since its inception, Vidyashakti has been associated with the Kashi Tamil Sangamam, contributing to the promotion of Tamil culture and language.

Digital Didi Program

One of the hallmark features of Vidyashakti is its Digital Didi program, which aims to empower various demographics, including:

  • Women
  • Youth
  • First-generation college students
  • Single mothers
  • Eldest daughters

This program trains participants in digital skills, allowing them to earn Rs 2,000 a month by contributing just one hour of digital work per day. This initiative not only promotes digital literacy but also creates a direct link between these skills and livelihood opportunities, thereby enhancing the economic independence of participants.

Gratitude and Acknowledgements

The IIT Madras team, along with the Vidyashakti initiative, has expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister, the Kashi Tamil Sangamam organizers, and the committee for providing a platform to showcase this integrated model of Tamil language learning, STEM education, and digital empowerment on the sacred land of Kashi. The initiative reflects a commitment to not only preserving the Tamil language but also ensuring its relevance in contemporary society.

Conclusion

The Vidyashakti initiative by IIT Madras represents a significant step forward in language education, particularly for Tamil. By leveraging digital tools and a practical approach to learning, it aims to make Tamil accessible and engaging for a diverse audience. As it continues to expand its reach, Vidyashakti is poised to play a crucial role in promoting Tamil language and culture in India and beyond.
