IIT (ISM) hosts workshop on maths, healthcare

Dhanbad, March 27, 2026 – The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad (IIT (ISM)) has commenced a two-day national workshop focused on the application of mathematics in human health and healthcare research. The workshop, titled From Equations to Life: Mathematical Insights into Human Health, was inaugurated at the seminar hall of the Department of Mathematics and Computing.

Inauguration Ceremony

The workshop was inaugurated by the Director of IIT (ISM), Prof. Sukumar Mishra, in the presence of the Head of the Department, Prof. S.P. Tiwari, and the convenor, Prof. R.K. Upadhyay. During the inaugural session, Prof. Mishra emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary engagements in tackling complex challenges within the healthcare sector.

Keynote Addresses

Prof. Upadhyay highlighted the extensive real-life applications of mathematical equations, particularly in understanding various aspects of human health. He stated, “Mathematics plays a crucial role in modeling and analyzing health-related data, which can lead to significant advancements in healthcare research.”

Additionally, Prof. Tiwari discussed the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare research, noting that AI technologies are increasingly being integrated into medical practices to enhance diagnostic accuracy and treatment efficacy.

Workshop Objectives

The workshop is organized under the Scientific Social Responsibility initiative of the ANRF (Applied Numerical Research Foundation) in collaboration with the NASI (National Academy of Sciences India) Jharkhand Chapter. It aims to provide selected teachers from across Jharkhand with insights into the application of mathematics in healthcare.

Participants will engage in a variety of sessions, including:

  • Lectures by experts from prestigious institutions such as IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, Visva-Bharati, and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.
  • Topics covering medical imaging, Bayesian modeling, Parkinson’s disease modeling, and cardiac motion equations.
  • Simulation-based discussions and interactive sessions.
  • Campus exposure visits to familiarize participants with ongoing research initiatives.

Participation

The workshop has attracted more than 25 offline participants and over 60 online participants, reflecting a strong interest in the intersection of mathematics and healthcare. This diverse participation underscores the relevance of mathematical applications in addressing real-world health challenges.

Conclusion

The workshop will conclude on March 28, 2026, with a focus on collaborative discussions and knowledge sharing among participants. By fostering a deeper understanding of mathematical techniques in healthcare, IIT (ISM) aims to contribute significantly to the advancement of health research and education in the region.

Note: The integration of mathematics in healthcare not only enhances research capabilities but also paves the way for innovative solutions to pressing health issues.
