IIT Delhi and ERLDC Collaborate on AI-Enabled Smart Device for Energy Management

On November 18, 2025, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi announced a significant collaboration with the Eastern Regional Load Dispatch Centre (ERLDC) aimed at developing an innovative AI-enabled system designed for demand-side energy management. This partnership seeks to empower consumers to manage their energy consumption more efficiently, thereby contributing to sustainability in energy use.

Overview of the AI-Enabled System

The proposed system will feature a built-in real-time-of-use (TOU) tariff plan, which adjusts the cost per unit of electricity based on the time of day. This pricing strategy reflects the real-time balance of supply and demand for electricity, providing consumers with the opportunity to optimize their energy use according to cost fluctuations.

Objectives of the Project

Preeti Ranjan Panda, the Dean of Corporate Relations at IIT Delhi, highlighted the primary objectives of the project:

  • To develop an AI-enabled smart home energy management system.
  • To optimize electricity consumption and costs while ensuring user comfort.
  • To integrate smart plugs, sensors, and microcontrollers for data processing.
  • To utilize machine learning and optimization algorithms for automated load control.
  • To enhance demand flexibility and improve grid reliability.

Technological Integration

The smart device will incorporate various technological components to achieve its goals:

  • Smart Plugs: These devices will allow users to control their appliances remotely and monitor energy consumption.
  • Sensors: They will gather data on occupancy, weather conditions, and user preferences to inform energy management decisions.
  • Microcontroller: This component will process the collected data and execute commands based on the algorithms developed.

Machine Learning and Optimization

By employing machine learning techniques and optimization algorithms, the system will be capable of:

  • Automating load control, which minimizes energy use during peak hours.
  • Supporting demand flexibility, allowing consumers to adjust their energy use based on real-time pricing.
  • Enhancing grid reliability by ensuring that energy consumption patterns align with supply capabilities.

Importance of Data Security

In addition to its energy management capabilities, the project places a strong emphasis on data security and privacy. The integration of wireless network protection and encryption mechanisms will ensure secure data exchange between devices and controllers. This focus on security is crucial as more consumers adopt smart technologies in their homes.

User Dashboard

A user-friendly dashboard will be developed to help consumers visualize their energy usage and potential savings in real time. This feature aims to enhance user engagement and encourage more responsible energy consumption habits.

Role of ERLDC

The Eastern Regional Load Dispatch Centre (ERLDC) plays a vital role in maintaining the stability and reliability of the power system in the eastern region of India. As one of the five Regional Load Dispatch Centres operated by Grid Controller of India Limited (Grid-India), ERLDC is responsible for:

  • Real-time monitoring of grid operations across eastern states.
  • Load management to balance supply and demand effectively.
  • Coordination with State Load Dispatch Centres (SLDCs) to ensure seamless energy distribution.

Conclusion

The collaboration between IIT Delhi and ERLDC marks a significant advancement in the integration of artificial intelligence with smart home technologies. By developing an AI-enabled smart device for demand-side energy management, the project aims to empower consumers and contribute to a more sustainable energy future.
