DMRC & IIT Hyderabad’s TiHAN Ink Pact For Autonomous Navigation Technologies

New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Technology Innovation Hub for Autonomous Navigation (TiHAN) at IIT Hyderabad. This collaboration aims to advance the development and deployment of cutting-edge autonomous navigation technologies.

Details of the Agreement

The MoU was signed by Shri Shobhan Chaudhuri, Advisor/R&D at DMRC, and Dr. Santosh Reddy, Hub Executive Officer of TiHAN. The signing ceremony was attended by notable figures including Dr. Vikas Kumar, Managing Director of DMRC, Shri Manuj Singhal, Director of Infrastructure, along with other DMRC Directors, and esteemed professors from IIT Hyderabad, such as Prof. Malla Reddy, Dean of Innovation, and Prof. P. Rajalakshmi.

Objectives of the Collaboration

This partnership aims to leverage the strengths and expertise of both organizations in implementing autonomous navigation technologies. The focus will be on creating safe, smart, and next-generation mobility solutions, particularly for last-mile connectivity in major metropolitan areas and public transit systems in Tier II and III cities.

Integration of Expertise

Through this initiative, DMRC and TiHAN plan to integrate their respective expertise in autonomous navigation, sensing technologies, and data acquisition systems. This collaboration will support the development of various mobility platforms, including:

  • Autonomous vehicles
  • Robots
  • Drones
  • Other mobility platforms capable of operating without human intervention

Significance of TiHAN

TiHAN is a hub established by the Department of Science & Technology (DST) under the National Mission in Cyber Physical Systems. Its primary goal is to develop autonomous navigation and data acquisition systems that enable ground vehicles, robots, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and other autonomous platforms to navigate and collect data independently.

Future Implications

The collaboration between DMRC and TiHAN is expected to pave the way for innovative solutions in urban mobility. The integration of autonomous navigation technologies will not only enhance the efficiency of public transportation but also contribute to sustainable urban development. This initiative aligns with India’s vision for a technologically advanced and environmentally friendly transportation system.

Upcoming Events

To further explore the advancements in sustainable urban rail mobility, DMRC and TiHAN invite stakeholders to participate in InnoMetro 2026, India’s premier exhibition and conference for metro and railways. This event is scheduled to be held on 21-22 May 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. Interested participants can register at InnoMetro Registration.

Conclusion

The signing of the MoU between DMRC and IIT Hyderabad’s TiHAN marks a significant step towards the future of autonomous navigation technologies in India. By combining resources and expertise, both organizations aim to revolutionize urban mobility and enhance the public transport experience for millions of commuters.
