Delhi Jal Board, IIT Kanpur Join Hands for AI-Based Urban Water Management Model
In a significant move towards enhancing the efficiency and transparency of Delhi’s water management systems, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Airawat Research Foundation (ARF), a National AI Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Cities at IIT Kanpur. This partnership aims to develop an AI-driven urban water management model that addresses key urban challenges.
Objectives of the Partnership
The collaboration between DJB and ARF focuses on creating AI-based and data-driven solutions to tackle several pressing urban issues, including:
- Reduction of non-revenue water
- Predictive maintenance of infrastructure
- Real-time monitoring of water and sewage treatment plants
Innovative Technologies Employed
One of the groundbreaking technologies that will be utilized in this initiative is Digital Twin technology. This technology will enable the creation of virtual replicas of DJB’s water systems, allowing for:
- Early detection of leakages
- Monitoring pressure drops
- Identifying system inefficiencies
Enhancing Public Services
The project also aims to develop AI-enabled public grievance redressal and revenue management systems. These systems are designed to:
- Ensure faster responses to citizen complaints
- Improve billing accuracy
- Enhance overall customer satisfaction
Supporting the Clean Yamuna Mission
This initiative will also support the Water Board’s Clean Yamuna Mission by implementing AI-assisted monitoring of wastewater discharge and pollution sources. This will help in:
- Reducing the flow of untreated sewage into the Yamuna River
Details of the MoU
The MoU was signed in the presence of Delhi’s Water Minister, Parvesh Verma, along with senior officials from the DJB and representatives from IIT Kanpur. It is important to note that the MoU is non-financial and non-binding, with both institutions committed to collaborating on:
- Research
- Data integration
- Deployment of advanced AI technologies
This collaboration aims to modernize and streamline Delhi’s water and wastewater management systems.
Groundwater Management
The scope of the partnership extends to AI-assisted groundwater monitoring and recharge planning. This will involve:
- Integrating data from borewells
- Utilizing sensors
- Incorporating satellite imagery
These efforts will enable real-time tracking and sustainable management of Delhi’s aquifers.
Predictive Analytics for Informed Decision-Making
The use of predictive analytics and smart simulations is expected to assist the DJB in making informed decisions regarding:
- Water demand
- Recharge zones
- Long-term resource security
Data Privacy and Compliance
Under this initiative, data privacy and ownership will remain with the DJB. All activities will comply with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and other applicable laws. The collaboration emphasizes:
- Transparency
- Accountability
- Citizen-focused innovation in public service delivery
Minister’s Statement
Minister Verma remarked that this partnership marks a decisive leap towards a data-driven, transparent, and accountable water governance system in Delhi. He expressed confidence that these tools will:
- Detect problems before they occur
- Improve efficiency from supply to billing
- Rebuild citizens’ trust in public service delivery
He emphasized the commitment to making every drop count—from treating wastewater to monitoring groundwater, from reducing losses to resolving grievances, ensuring clean, reliable, and equitable water for every household in the city.
Project Oversight
Under this collaboration, the Chief Executive Officer of DJB will serve as the Project Director from Delhi’s side, providing strategic oversight and coordination for all activities. A nodal officer will also be appointed to work closely with ARF’s technical team to ensure smooth implementation and regular review of the projects.
Note: This collaboration represents a significant step towards improving urban water management in Delhi through the integration of advanced technologies and data-driven solutions.
