C-DOT Establishes Centre of Excellence at IIT Gandhinagar

On November 10, 2025, the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) and the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IIT-GN) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE). This initiative aims to promote research, innovation, and the development of indigenous products in the telecom and cybersecurity domains.

Purpose of the Centre of Excellence

The CoE will serve as a hub for both fundamental and applied research, focusing on C-DOT’s existing expertise in telecommunications and information and communication technology (ICT). The primary objectives of the CoE include:

  • Facilitating collaboration between IIT-GN students, faculty, researchers, and C-DOT researchers.
  • Enriching research efforts to find practical solutions to problems in the telecom and ICT sectors.
  • Leveraging niche and emerging technologies to address real-world challenges.

Supporting Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The CoE is designed to foster a robust innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem. It will support:

  • Incubation and mentoring for start-ups.
  • Collaboration with industries and academic institutions.
  • Training and capacity-building programs aligned with national missions in telecom, semiconductor, and digital transformation.

These initiatives aim to create an industry-ready workforce capable of meeting the technological demands of the future.

Collaborative Efforts and Scholarly Activities

Both C-DOT and IIT-GN will work together on various scholarly activities, including:

  • Joint publications in reputable journals.
  • Patent filing for innovative technologies developed through their collaboration.
  • Organizing seminars and workshops to disseminate knowledge and foster discussion.
  • Developing final products that can be commercialized or further researched.

Vision for Technological Advancement

The Chief Executive Officer of C-DOT emphasized that establishing the CoE is a significant step towards creating a dynamic and collaborative environment. By combining the strengths and resources of C-DOT and IIT Gandhinagar, the CoE aims to:

  • Advance next-generation telecom technologies.
  • Encourage the development of intellectual property.
  • Strengthen India’s position as a global leader in technological innovation.

Alignment with National Goals

This initiative aligns with the Indian government’s vision of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) and “Viksit Bharat” (developed India). C-DOT envisions a self-reliant India that not only meets its technological needs but also contributes to global progress through indigenous innovation and capability building.

Importance of Self-Reliance in Digital Technologies

The Director of IIT-GN remarked on the importance of self-reliance in digital and communication technologies, as well as cybersecurity, for the security, growth, and development of the country. He stated that the MoU synergizes the strengths of both institutions, marking a significant step towards building indigenous capabilities and fostering innovation.

Future Prospects

As the CoE begins its operations, it is expected to play a crucial role in:

  • Driving research that leads to technological breakthroughs.
  • Creating a skilled workforce that can adapt to the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
  • Enhancing collaboration between academia and industry to solve pressing challenges in telecommunications and cybersecurity.

This partnership is poised to contribute significantly to India’s technological landscape and its aspirations for self-reliance.

Note: The establishment of the Centre of Excellence at IIT Gandhinagar represents a strategic collaboration aimed at fostering innovation and addressing the challenges in the telecom and cybersecurity sectors, ultimately contributing to India’s technological advancement.
