Bharat Innovates Basecamp Opens at IIT-Gn
Gandhinagar: In a significant step towards transforming deep scientific research into commercially viable products, the Bharat Innovates 2026 National Basecamp commenced at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT-Gn) on December 19, 2025. The event attracted approximately 400 deep-tech startups and research teams, all shortlisted from over 1,000 applications. This initiative marks a crucial milestone in a national innovation pipeline aimed at selecting 100 ventures to represent India at the International Showcase in Nice, France, scheduled for June next year.
Overview of the Initiative
The Bharat Innovates Basecamp is organized by the Ministry of Education and is coordinated by IIT-Gn and IIT-Bombay. The innovations presented at the Basecamp span across 13 research domains, including:
- Advanced Computing (AI, Quantum Computing)
- Semiconductors
- Space and Defence Technologies
- Healthcare and Medtech
- Biotechnology
- Energy and Climate Solutions
- Agriculture and Food Technologies
- Smart Cities and Mobility
- Disaster Management and Resilient Infrastructure
- Manufacturing
- Next-Generation Communications
Goals and Objectives
Prof. Sankalp Pratap of IIT-Bombay explained that Bharat Innovates was conceived to enhance the existing university-based innovation ecosystem and facilitate deep-tech innovators in moving beyond laboratory settings. The program is designed to connect academic innovations more effectively with industry and investors.
Deputy Secretary Garima Sharma from the Ministry of Education emphasized that the initiative aims to identify “Indian deep-tech solutions” to global challenges and present them to international markets. “The focus is on connecting and showcasing our work to venture capitalists, investors, and leading experts on the global stage to deliver commercially viable products,” she stated.
Background and Vision
The idea for the Bharat Innovates initiative has been in development since the previous year, rooted in the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. K N Satyanarayana, director of IIT-Tirupati, noted that the program arose from the recognition that while Indian universities generate high-quality research, they often struggle to translate it into deployable products. “The disconnect between academia and industry highlighted the need for an ecosystem that brings together researchers, investors, industry, and government,” he said.
Providing an overview of the broader roadmap, Prof. Milind Atrey, deputy director of IIT-Bombay, stated that Bharat Innovates represents a collective national effort to ensure that India’s scientific strengths yield “solutions that are scalable, deployable, and globally competitive.”
Activities at the Basecamp
Over the next few days, startups participating in the Basecamp will engage in mentoring sessions, technical evaluations, and pitch their ideas to a jury of investors and market leaders. The final selection for the showcase in France will be made from this pool of innovative projects.
Startup Highlights
Among the notable startups participating in the Bharat Innovates Basecamp are:
Braille Tablet (UDot | Bengaluru)
This startup has developed a tactile Braille tablet that utilizes moving micro-blocks to convert diagrams and illustrations into touch-based learning tools. Founder and CEO Kaviraj Prithvi shared that the idea emerged after visits to schools for visually impaired children, revealing that many students drop STEM subjects after Class 7 due to a lack of accessible tools, particularly in science and geometry.
AI Stethoscope (AI Health Highway | Bengaluru)
This startup has created an AI-enabled stethoscope that transmits heart and lung sounds to a mobile application, where the readings are logged, analyzed, and shared with clinicians. Designed for remote diagnosis and follow-up, the device facilitates longitudinal patient monitoring and supports telemedicine-driven primary care.
External Suturing Tool (Devono Bioinnovations | Pune)
This innovation is a handheld wound-closure device that replaces traditional needle-based suturing with a fast-acting adhesive system. Inspired by a personal experience involving post-surgical infection, the tool aims to reduce procedure time, needle injuries, and patient discomfort while lowering infection risks in both emergency and routine care settings.
Conclusion
The Bharat Innovates Basecamp at IIT-Gn is a pivotal initiative that aims to bridge the gap between academic research and marketable innovations. By fostering collaboration among researchers, investors, and industry leaders, it seeks to position India as a key player in the global deep-tech landscape. The selected startups not only represent the future of innovation in India but also highlight the potential of Indian ingenuity to tackle pressing global challenges.
