IIT Roorkee Changes Rules for JEE Advanced 2026

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has announced significant changes to the eligibility criteria for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced 2026. These modifications aim to streamline the admission process and ensure that only qualified candidates can participate in this prestigious examination.

New Eligibility Criteria

The new eligibility rules, which were communicated through an official notice, outline five critical points that every candidate must adhere to in order to be eligible for JEE Advanced 2026. Below is a summary of these requirements:

1. JEE Main Qualification

To be eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2026, candidates must first secure a position among the top 250,000 successful candidates in the JEE Main 2026 (B.E./B.Tech paper). This requirement ensures that only the most capable candidates advance to the next stage of the admission process.

2. Reserved Category Seats

The percentage of seats allocated for reserved categories will remain unchanged. Additionally, candidates with disabilities (PwD) will receive a 5% reservation in each category, promoting inclusivity within the examination process.

3. Age Limit Regulations

Age limits have been established for candidates based on their category:

  • General Category: Candidates must be born on or after October 1, 2001.
  • SC/ST and PwD Candidates: A relaxation of 5 years is provided, meaning these candidates must be born on or after October 1, 1996.

4. Examination Attempts

Candidates will now have the opportunity to take the JEE Advanced examination only twice, and these attempts must be made in two consecutive years. This rule emphasizes the importance of thorough preparation within a limited timeframe.

5. 12th Grade Examination Requirements

One of the most significant changes pertains to the eligibility based on the 12th-grade board examination. Only candidates who first took the 12th board exam in 2025 or 2026 will be eligible for JEE Advanced 2026. Candidates who completed their 12th grade in 2024 or earlier will not be eligible. However, if a board releases the 2023–24 results on or after June 18, 2024, those candidates who appeared for the exam in 2024 will be considered eligible. If the board withholds the results, the candidate will not be eligible.

Previous IIT Admission Candidates

Clear rules have also been established for candidates who have previously been admitted to IITs. If a candidate was allotted a seat at an IIT, accepted admission, reported, or subsequently had their seat canceled, they will not be eligible for JEE Advanced 2026. However, candidates who were enrolled in preparatory courses in 2025 or those who received an IIT seat in JoSAA 2025 but did not report will still be eligible to appear for the exam.

Exam Dates

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has also released the exam dates for JEE Main 2026:

  • Session 1: January 21 to January 30, 2026
  • Session 2: April 1 to April 10, 2026

IIT Roorkee will conduct the JEE Advanced 2026 computer-based exam on May 17, 2026.

Conclusion

The changes implemented by IIT Roorkee for JEE Advanced 2026 reflect a commitment to maintaining high standards in the admission process for engineering aspirants. Candidates are encouraged to familiarize themselves with these new rules and prepare accordingly to maximize their chances of success in this competitive examination.

Note: It is crucial for candidates to stay updated with any further announcements from IIT Roorkee and the NTA regarding the JEE Advanced 2026 examination.
