RSK IITK workshop training to craft jewellery with clay, crochet
Kanpur: A five-day jewellery-making workshop is currently underway at the Ranjit Singh Rozi Shiksha Kendra, IIT Kanpur (RSK IITK). The workshop, which commenced on March 16, has attracted over 70 participants, primarily artisans and youth from rural backgrounds. This initiative is designed to empower these individuals by providing them with new skills in jewellery crafting.

The workshop consists of two parallel sessions: one focusing on crafting jewellery with clay and the other on creating trendy accessories using threads and crochet techniques. This unique collaboration involves 34 rural artisans from traditional potter families in Gorakhpur, alongside students from nearby rural schools who are eager to learn and develop their skills.

According to Rita Singh, the project executive officer of RSK, the workshop aims to address the concerning trend of the younger generation of artisans moving away from traditional crafts. She stated, “The idea is to inspire them. Once they discover the joy of creating and designing, it will stay with them forever and pave the way for earnings.” This initiative not only seeks to preserve traditional crafts but also to provide a sustainable source of income for participants.

The clay jewellery workshop has attracted participants who are keen on learning the intricacies of this traditional craft. Meanwhile, the crochet workshop has seen 40 rural women using their existing skills to create fashionable thread jewellery. Many of these women are budding entrepreneurs looking to enhance their techniques and styles, with hopes of selling their creations online.

One of the trainers, Vandana, noted, “Some women are picking up very well, and I can pair up with them to fetch larger orders.” This collaborative approach not only enhances individual skills but also fosters a sense of community among the artisans.

She remarked, “There is room for many more artisans.” Her colleague, Saroj, added, “Each jewellery set crafted is different and unique. People like accessories that are eco-friendly, rooted in tradition, and stylish, and this craft offers it all.” This sentiment reflects the increasing consumer preference for sustainable and personalized products.

The workshop was inaugurated by the chief guest, Archna Soni, principal of Government Girls Inter College, Singhpur, where many participating girls are enrolled. Other notable attendees included Professor Archna Singh and Professor Rashmi Singh from the Department of Home Science at CSA Agriculture University, along with designers associated with the centre. Their presence underscores the collaborative effort to promote and support traditional crafts.
