IIT Madras Launches ‘Language and Cognition Lab’ to Study India’s Linguistic Diversity
On November 14, 2025, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) inaugurated the ‘Language and Cognition Laboratory’ (LC-Lab), marking a significant step in the study of India’s rich linguistic diversity. This pioneering lab, established within the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, is the first of its kind in India to systematically engage with the country’s vast array of languages through experimental linguistics.
Objectives of the Language and Cognition Lab
The primary aim of the LC-Lab is to explore how humans perceive, process, and produce language by employing advanced experimental methods. In the long term, the lab seeks to contribute to the development of human-centered and linguistically aware artificial intelligence (AI) systems. This initiative ensures that India’s languages and cultures are represented in emerging technologies.
Collaboration with the Centre for Responsible AI
The LC-Lab will collaborate closely with the Centre for Responsible AI (CeRAI) at IIT Madras. This partnership aims to explore the applications of AI methods in the research of language and cognition, thereby enhancing the understanding of linguistic diversity in India.
Director’s Vision
V. Kamakoti, the Director of IIT Madras, emphasized the importance of integrating linguistic theory with modern experimental and computational tools. He stated, “Linguistics is increasingly moving toward empirical, data-driven inquiry, combining methodologies from the sciences and humanities. India needed a dedicated facility that fills this gap.” The LC-Lab is designed to connect linguistics, cognitive science, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence, contributing to the development of socially relevant and linguistically informed technologies.
Research Focus and Methodologies
The LC-Lab will investigate how individuals process linguistic information through various techniques, including:
- Eye-tracking studies
- Reaction-time experiments
Its research will primarily focus on Indian languages, providing crucial insights into how grammar, voice, and sentence structure are understood and produced in multilingual contexts. Current projects include studies on grammatical voice and copula constructions, while future research aims to examine dyslexia in Indian children. The goal is to improve educational outcomes and develop linguistically relevant teaching interventions.
Faculty Coordinator’s Insights
Anindita Sahoo, the Faculty Coordinator of the LC-Lab, articulated the lab’s mission: “The Language and Cognition Laboratory is dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary research in language and cognition through technologies that reveal behavioral patterns and enable data-driven understanding of human interaction.” This interdisciplinary framework aims to integrate insights from science, technology, and the humanities, enhancing both academic research and technological innovation.
Short-term and Long-term Goals
In the short term, the LC-Lab will conduct experimental research using eye-tracking technology to validate established linguistic theories in Indian languages. Looking ahead, the lab plans to incorporate advanced neurocognitive techniques, such as:
- Electroencephalography (EEG)
- Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
These tools will support comprehensive research in language, cognition, and computational modeling, while fostering collaboration with experts in psychology, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence.
Support and Funding
The establishment of the LC-Lab has been made possible through support from the IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation and Aspire Infolab, Hyderabad. Their contributions have been instrumental in setting up the lab and its research infrastructure.
Conclusion
The launch of the Language and Cognition Lab at IIT Madras represents a significant advancement in the study of linguistics and cognitive science in India. By focusing on the country’s linguistic diversity and integrating modern technologies, the lab aims to foster a deeper understanding of language and cognition, ultimately contributing to the development of AI systems that respect and represent India’s rich cultural heritage.
