CSR Initiative Advances Cancer Care in India with Cancer Tissue Sample Collections and Screenings
Gurugram, India: On National Cancer Awareness Day, the Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF), the corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm of Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL), reaffirmed its commitment to transforming cancer care through its flagship initiative, ‘Hyundai Hope for Cancer.’ This initiative was developed in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and has made significant strides in cancer research, prevention, and awareness since its launch in September 2025.
Key Components of the Initiative
At the heart of the ‘Hyundai Hope for Cancer’ initiative is the Hyundai Centre for Cancer Genomics located at IIT Madras. This center is home to:
- India’s First Community-Based Cancer Tissue Biobank: This biobank aims to collect and preserve cancer tissue samples for research purposes, facilitating advancements in cancer treatment and personalized medicine.
- Bharat Cancer Genome Atlas (BCGA): This is the nation’s first open-access cancer genome database, designed to accelerate breakthroughs in personalized oncology and improve cancer care across the country.
Impact on Cancer Care
The ‘Hyundai Hope for Cancer’ initiative has already impacted thousands of lives by enhancing access to cancer care and promoting awareness about the disease. Mr. Puneet Anand, AVP & Vertical Head – Corporate Affairs, Corporate Communication & Social at HMIL, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “Hyundai Hope for Cancer reflects our firm belief that technology, compassion, and collaboration can drive transformative change in cancer care.”
Financial Commitment
HMIF has committed a substantial amount of INR 56 Crore towards this initiative, which includes a dedicated Cancer Care Fund of INR 3 Crore. This financial backing is aimed at ensuring that the initiative can sustain its efforts and expand its reach, ultimately benefiting more individuals affected by cancer.
Community Engagement and Awareness
In addition to tissue sample collections and genomic research, the initiative focuses on community engagement and awareness campaigns. These campaigns are designed to educate the public about cancer prevention, early detection, and the importance of seeking timely medical intervention. By fostering a well-informed community, the initiative aims to reduce the stigma associated with cancer and encourage individuals to prioritize their health.
Future Goals
Looking ahead, the ‘Hyundai Hope for Cancer’ initiative aims to:
- Expand the reach of the Cancer Tissue Biobank to include more diverse populations across India.
- Enhance the capabilities of the Bharat Cancer Genome Atlas to include more comprehensive genomic data.
- Collaborate with other research institutions and healthcare organizations to further cancer research and treatment options.
- Continue to raise awareness about cancer prevention and treatment through community outreach programs.
Conclusion
The ‘Hyundai Hope for Cancer’ initiative represents a significant step forward in the fight against cancer in India. By combining advanced research, community engagement, and substantial financial support, HMIF is paving the way for a future where every citizen has access to timely, personalized, and dignified cancer care. As the initiative continues to grow, it holds the promise of transforming the landscape of cancer treatment and research in India.
